- Record-breaking temperatures in the Russian capital last week seemed to tell Moscow's sun-starved residents only one thing: Stash away your ushankas and winter boots. Bring out your neon-colored sunglasses.
- But in Russia, nothing is what it seems, and the weather is no exception.
- The all-out blizzard that took place in Moscow on Sunday appeared to be Mother Nature's way of reminding mere humans never to predict her next move. The scores of winter coats that were packed away just last week soon made a reappearance, as a thin layer of snow covered the city within minutes.
- Tourists visiting Moscow's iconic White, sorry, Red Square were welcomed with the full winter treatment:
- And so it happened that from highs last week of 13 degrees Celsius — the warmest ever recorded at this time of year — the temperature dropped to about minus 10.3 C Sunday night, the RIA Novosti news site reported.
- "Spring, where are you?" asked this Instagram user of no one in particular.
- The bad news for Muscovites is that the weather is set to get little better this week, with a cyclone predicted to blow in from Scandinavia on Monday evening.
More snow is expected to fall overnight and will turn to slush by Tuesday morning, RIA cited forecasters from the Fobos weather center as saying. They added that the temperature will hover about 4-6 C, and that wind speeds will reach up to 10 meters per second during the day. - Wednesday will see the thermometer touch between 5-7 C, though temperatures will drop again to about 3-5 C on Thursday and to about zero on Friday, the report said.
A little more patience, then! And if you need some escapism, start thinking about how to turn your living room into a swimming pool to escape the upcoming summer heat.
