- As Moscow struggled to come to terms with Tuesday's deadly metro accident, people grieved for its victims both in real life and online as the Russian capital held a day of mourning.
Wednesday saw dozens of mourners pay a visit to the Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bulvar metro stations — the sites of Tuesday's deadly derailment which took more than 20 lives. - But with traffic both above and underground still disrupted, many Muscovites stood no chance of making it to one of the stations to pay their condolences. Instead, they took to social media to mourn the victims and support their families.
- And in a symbol of continued close ties between Russia and Ukraine despite recent political tensions, one user showed mourners in Kiev laying down flowers and lighting candles outside the Russian Embassy.
- Some called for President Vladimir Putin to cut short his visit to South America in view of the tragedy. "The fact that Putin is continuing his visit to Brazil shows that he doesn't care about people's lives," this Twitter user complained.
- One user of Russia's popular VKontakte network posted an image that summed up the common helplessness in view of Tuesday's tragedy. Superimposed on a picture of people waiting for their subway train, the text reads: "It's dangerous to fly by planes, idiots drive cars, so I decided to use the metro for safety."
- And one Twitter user spoke for many when it voiced concerns about the general safety of Moscow's underground railway system: "I am now even more afraid than before to ride the metro," she wrote.
