1. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the city!

That's perhaps the best advice for those who complain about Moscow's summer temperatures. But with jobs to do and people to meet, not everybody can afford to flee to a dacha in the shade.

So for those of you who have to stay in Moscow, here are ten photos that will make the heat a little more bearable.
  2. 1. Gorky Park's rainbow generator.

Bright sun plus water vapor equals guaranteed rainbows. So find a fountain, enjoy the view, but don't go plunging into the basin. That "pot of gold" thing only works in Ireland.

  4. 2. Get on up.

If the breeze won't come to you, then you must go to the breeze. Whether it's a fancy rooftop bar or just the top of your apartment block, reach high for lower temperatures. And if you can find an intellectual challenge requiring a cool head, like a round of chess, all the better.
  5. 3. Cool as a cucumber.

The human body may consist of 70 percent water, but cucumbers beat us every time. At 95 percent water, they make excellent summer fare, be it as a meal or a drink. And if you stay up too late, you can always put the remaining slices on your eyes the next morning.
  6. 4. Evening clouds.

As temperatures drop, summer dusk offers some spectacular views. Enjoy the yellow, orange and pink that gradually fade into purple, indigo and blue.
  7. 5. There's always room for ice-cream.

If these women below were buying ice-cream during the Russian winter, just think how much more you will enjoy it in the summer.

Who wants Baskin-Robbins or Ben & Jerry's when you can go Soviet with Plombir ice-cream? This is a whole new, and much sweeter, approach to the Cold War.
  8. 6. Cruise in style.

If you just moved to Moscow, you'll quickly learn that speed limits are rare and exist to be violated. So get into your cabriolet, take out your migalka if you have one, step on it and let the air rushing by cool you down. (In a pinch, a scooter or even a bicycle work just as well if you go fast enough.)
  9. 7. Find Moscow's green spots.

Even a city as developed as Moscow has its green nooks and corners, you just have to know where to find them. So ask around, get some ideas from friends or people who have lived here longer than you have. Then hide in the high grass, switch off your phone and refuse to be bothered.
  10. 8. Cool down in the metro.

Cool marble walls, high vaulted ceilings - the metro's palatial architecture makes it a good place to cool down.

Make sure you go for one of the historic stops, avoid rush hour and bring your pencils and sketching pad. After half an hour spent pondering perspective and how to put it on paper, you'll feel fresher by several degrees.
  11. 9. Dress the part.

Whether you go for the Marilyn-Monroe-caught-in-a-gust-of-wind-or the Indiana-Jones-making-his-way-through-the-jungle look, in summer you'll get away with much more than in winter as far as dress is concerned. So if the heat is stifling, wear your flimsiest, flounciest dress - or your most rugged, outdoorsy pants. (Then maybe take a picture and share your look online.)
  12. 10. Consider the alternative.

Sunshine comes with heat, heat comes with sunshine. It's called summer, and it's a fact. And seriously, would you rather have this?
  13. Or, even worse: this?!
