Music Discovery in Public Radio: #MIFocus at NON-COMMvention 2015

Just before the 2015 NON-COMMvention got underway at Philadelphia's WXPN, funders and public radio general managers convened for a discussion on new methods of music discovery their stations were implementing.

  1. The meeting began with a welcome by Roger LaMay, general manager at WXPN, and Vince Stehle, executive director of Media Impact Funders. Both were excited to share new tools for music discovery and hear about how funders and stations have been able to expand their audiences in innovative ways.
  2. A centerpiece of our discussions was the exciting announcement of a brand new collaborative viewing project by public radio music leaders in Austin, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia and Seattle.
  3. As introductions were made across the room, funders and general managers were both asked to share both their most exciting projects and what "kept them up at night" in building successful stations.
  4. With the collaborative video platform VuHaus launching the same day as the meeting, and many of the participating stations' GMs in the room, there was an exciting discussion about how the site could be a way forward for public radio in the digital era.
