How the top Social Media Influencers marketed Ireland during the Social Media Summit 2016 #SMSummitIRL

On the 1st & 2nd March 2016 the inaugural Social Media Summit took place at The Aviva Stadium, Dublin. This article follows how the speakers and other guests enjoyed their visit and in the process marketed Ireland too!

  1. When the top Social Media Influencers flew in from the UK and North America, they were not marketers, they were consumers. Consumers of our food and drink, consumers of our hospitality and personality, consumers of our sights and sounds, consumers of our culture and craic. And on 'the craic', we were careful to explain its meaning and stick to the Irish spelling 'craic'. More about that later!
  2. I had the pleasure of being on the Social Media Summit Team and helped to manage some of the Social Networks for the event, in particular the Twitter account. I had the advantage then, that I saw so many posts for a number of weeks in the run up to the event, during it and afterwards. It struck me that the people who came to visit Dublin for the Summit were actually marketing Ireland for us and we didn't have to lift a finger! All we had to do was to be ourselves. As marketers though and as Social Media nerds, their instinct was to share their experiences with their communities online. Goal to Ireland!
  3. I should also say that some of the international speakers were eager to share their 'Irishness'. Melonie Dodaro from Canada told how she recently found her father using Social Media and subsequently took a DNA test given to her by Ancestry.com. The results - she was proud to reveal that she's 5% Irish. Steve Dotto, also Canadian, has 25% Irish blood running through his veins. Brian Fanzo from the US told us that his mother's name was Patty Farrell.
  4. The combined following of these influential visitors must be in the many millions and remember that their fan base hang on their every word. So I thought it would be fun to show you the proof. I have chosen a selection from across the social web as the speakers and other guests tweet, scope, post and snap their way through Social Media Summit 2016. The event had in excess of 117M timeline deliveries on Twitter alone over the two days of the event. The hashtag #SMSummitIRL trended on both days and briefly again the following morning.

  5. Roll back to just before Christmas last year when I saw this tweet appearing.
