Kick-start Off Your Week With Cheap Entertainment In Iowa City

Iowa City, IA, is not just a town with solely a bar scene. Local venues provide cheap music entertainment daily and showcases talent from all over. Here is a look at some of the entertainment during the week of April 15 - 17. This shows the variety that is available during a typical week.

  1. The UI School of Music holds several concerts, recitals and other performances throughout the week that all of the community has access to. This particular week alone, the UI School of Music is hosting or performing 26 shows that range from a single person showcasing their talent on the bassoon to a faculty ensemble of brass players. Every one of those 26 shows are free to the community as well.

  3. The Englert Theatre is known for its history and emphasis to keep it a community arts center. Their focus is to showcase local artists and also bringing nationally known performances. Billy Bragg, an English alternative rock artist, paid a visit to the Englert on Monday night, April 15th. He has played in groups such as The Blokes and Riff-Raff.

  5. Lydia, an indie rock band from Gilbert, AZ, headlined a show at The Mill on Tuesday, April 16th. Formed in 2003, they have released four albums since their time together. Their 2013 tour is to promote their most recent album release, Devil. Lydia had two opening acts for their show: Sweet Talker and From Indian Lakes.

  7. From Indian Lakes, an indie/alternative band from Yosemite, CA, is made up of five young men. Their debut album was released in 2009, titled "The Man With Wooden Legs." Their most recent release in 2012 is titled "Able Bodies." They hope to continue spreading their music across the nation, growing their fame.

  9. Sweet Talker is a newly found group by Kevin Fisher in 2011 in Phoenix, AZ. He is widely known for his amazing covers of mainstream songs and his moving original tunes.

  11. Good For You is a newly formed duo that performed at Gabe's on Tuesday, April 16th. The duo is comprised of professional skateboarder, Mike Vallely, and former Black Flag guitarist, Gregg Ginn. They released their debut cd in February titled "Life Is Too Short to Not Hold a Grudge." Good For You's songs are high-energy rock songs that deliver some sort of strong statement internally.
  12. Threefifty Duo - Victory Drill Guitar (amazing new guitar duo!)
  13. Threefifty Duo is comprised of Brett Parnell and Geremy Schulick, who come from Brooklyn, NY. The two formed the group after the both studied at the Yale School of Music. Theefifty Duo's song style ranges from indie rock to Baroque style music. Unfortunately, their show was cancelled in Iowa City on Wednesday, April 17th, due to the monsoon-like weather that hit but is planned to be rescheduled for Sunday, April 21st, at The Mill. 
  14. Spankalicious took over Gabe's on Wednesday, April 17th. Based out of Cincinnati, OH, DJ Kevin Moore makes songs that fall under the category of music "psychedelic bounce," which is comprised of scratching, drumming, blending and mixing to make a beat. He has not released any full length albums but has a record deal with Grassroots California. Moore's main goal is to deliver beats that can put his audience in some sort of musical trance.
