Dancing While Black: A Five-Year Retrospective (2012-2017)

On the eve of Dancing While Black's fifth anniversary season, founder Paloma McGregor and members of the DWB community reflect on the platform's history and spark a dialogue about its future. Dancing While Black was founded in 2012 to center Black voices in a field that marginalizes our work, particularly artists whose practices do not fit neatly into the reductive labels predetermined for Black bodies in dance.

  7. "What's interesting to me is what Dancing While Black needs to be NOW...what we need to vision needs equal energy...of what use might this be for us..." - Paloma McGregor preparing us to witness reflections on #DancingwhileBlack "...It is not my everything - but it is my thing... where the me and the we intersect"

  8. "Who is telling our stories and how are they being told... Moving that into the voices and bodies of black dancers themselves...It serves as a step towards artistic liberation." Paloma McGregor on the vision of #DancingwhileBlack
Paloma goes on to share how the 2014 performance "Collective(s) Action" at BAAD "gave me this place to put the seed...BAAD was already a fertile soil - home space, safe place." "The idea of naming something was important... here we are and we have a place..." - Charles Rice Gonzalez on the history of the partnership with @baadbronx

  9. @sydmosley shares how #DancingwhileBlack has embodied a "parallel growth and intersecting growth" as she had developed her choreographic work and voice.

She values this "low stakes surfacing of ideas...To be amongst Black folk and take your risks...It's a different feeling. It doesn't feel like everything I've worked for is on the line." In this political moment, Sydnie is "grounding down in Black institution building... There are so many people in this room who are building out their visions and we need that..."

  10. @shanijamila jumps in to share her #DancingwhileBlack connections --
"We were connected by real family (my uncle John)... It has been an intellectual home. A place to root our intersocial understanding and embodied expression... It's a relationship that I've really come to rely on... At this time when all of us beginning to reconsider what home means. Dancing While Black is a great, fertile space for that exploration." #artistservicesday #art #community #retrospective
