Taking a closer look at nouns, adjectives and verbs

Supporting teachers in "Intermediate French CPD "to make progress in language learning with primary learners:part of the WTSA/JLN DFE MFL funded http://www.janetlloyd.net/mfl-training-schedule.htm

  1. This is the second time that Emilie Woodruffe @EWoodruffe and I have rolled out our intermediate French CPD.It goes down really well with colleagues probably because we take colleagues through a "basic understanding of grammar".We share with them not only how to access and use nouns ,adjectives but also ways to share this knowledge with their primary school language learners. Emilie and I really love these sessions! I have put a link to my blog at the bottom of the report so that you can look at some of the activities we describe below in further detail.
  2. First we start with a simple dialogue between Emilie and myself. Then we ask teachers to talk with teachers before we ask teachers to ask Emilie questions and finally to let Emilie ask them questions. In the way we identify core sounds - today there was "ch" /"oi" /"ou" /"ez"/ .We go back to basic in phonics and look at face shapes ( catapults/ kisses/ tickling throat "r"/ and down your nose nasal slides! Now we have warmed up and are ready for phoneme - grapheme correspondence and synthesis of letter strings and sounds.
  3. We look for similarities in sounds in very familiar vocabulary - colours and numbers and we play our very simple "Seeking Sound Patterns" card sort game. You can find out more about this on my blog spot.
  4. Then we went on a "Hunt for Easter Egg Sounds". Which sounds on our Easter eggs did we need to create the Easter greeting?Which sounds didn't we need?
  5. And don't forget the silent "S" .You can find more out about these activities via the blog link at the bottom of this report.
  6. Emilie shared with colleagues how transferable she felt that this activity could be with differentiated tasks and outcomes and challenges for different stages of learners using a wide range of language.
  7. Today we played for the first time our Podcast game with one of our online SOW podcasts (there are 24 in total) .The first podcast is personal information.First look at the big picture - so the teachers below are sorting their listening cue cards to see if they can find a logical order they think they may hear them in a text .(It eas great to hear the teachers discussing what they understood and also where in a text they anticipated these words might fit).Great way to get listeners ready for a text and give them a feel for the context .....
  8. Once words are sorted then we can listen to the text for the first time.Listening to Emilie, as a sound file podcast, rather than her speaking to the teachers seems to make listening all that bit more of a challenge. We listen through once -with no sorting. We look for question words for key information etcetra. Now we listen again and try to order our word prompts in the order we hear them - we pop "bonjour" down as a head start. You can find out more about this activity via the blog link at the bottom of the report.
  9. As Emilie said - the activities are so transferable across KS2 language learning!
  10. The sequence of activities goes on to practise reading and writing skills and of course we have already been reading aloud key words in our discussions but now we can also prepare a spoken text about ourselves too and analyse written text so we can re-use key phrases and structures.Perhaps here we are able to revisit core language and to support children here to prepare for KS3 and more challenging listening activities ?
  11. In our work with "Beginners French and Spanish", we have already considered nouns, gender, plural, singular, definite and indefinite articles.
  12. In this session we want to take teachers further and allow them the chance to explore bilingual dictionaries too
  13. I Spy Nouns has proven to be very popular with our teachers and allows them to see how they can devise activities with their learners across KS2 to explore nouns through games like I spy nouns. This activity is described in a blogpost via the link at the bottom of the report.
  14. In this session we build fantastical sentences with our colleagues. We explore adjectival agreement and create our own noun ,verb , adjectives word shape sentences .We use a picture backdrop by Rousseau so that we can create purposeful written outcomes and use this with children to practise writing, grammar and generate an interesting display based on fantastical animals and shape sentence.
