Interested in Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for young people? Here's a Twitter chat from 12-1-16, hosted by IRETA, The Hilton Foundation, and The National Council for Behavioral Health.
Our chat began with introductions--participants represented organizations from across the county.
The first question was: In your opinion, why is adolescent substance use a cause for concern?
Participants had a number of ideas about this issue. They said substance use can worsen adolescents' health or their social environments.
Most participants stated we should be concerned about teen drug and alcohol use because research shows that substance use disorders almost always develop in adolescence.
Question #2: What are some problems with the ways we have historically addressed substance use with youth?
Scare tactics were criticized.
