NYC Anti-Street Harassment Rally Draws Over 500 Supporters!

On Saturday, April 5th, Hollaback! and 46 co-sponsoring organizations held an anti-street harassment rally in Washington Square Park. During the rally, Hollaback! unveiled Hiss!, the 12 foot tall inflatable #Catagainstcatcalls! The rally was followed by breakout workshops and a chalk walk.

  1. As the rally started up at 1pm, the supporters came out. @FemSocietyNYU rocked some amazing signs, including "person not object" and, our favorite, "Girls just wanna have fun-damental human rights"
  2. At the start of the rally, Hollaback! unveiled Hiss!, the giant inflatable cat against catcalls!  Hiss! will be set up in high street harassment areas around the city as part of an art campaign by Hollaback! to raise awareness of street harassment and increase bystander intervention.
  3. Speakers came from organizations all over NYC to raise their voices against street harassment.  As they spoke, supporters live-tweeted from the audience, using #endshnyc to join in.  La Roka @fullcirclesoul emceed the event
  4. Speakers such as Jerin of @NowYoungFems, Francesca from @STEPStoEndFV and @HunterLourdes of @TWPCCNYC discussed the intersections of identity, violence, and street harassment and called for bystanders to stand up!
  5. Many speakers let the audience know that they had their backs: including a message of support from @bettysdaughter1, a promise to have 20 derby girls behind you from @gothamgirls, and an interactive supportive dance performance from @syndiemosleydances
  6. Applied Theater Collective and @GirlBeHeard created AMAZING anti-street harassment performances and spoken word.
  7. The rally also focused on bystander intervention and creating safe spaces, with discussions on the 4 D's of bystander intervention from @safehorizon and workshops on male allies with Joe from @StopStHarassment
