  1. Sometimes a mortgage contract seems more obtainable than acceptance into a contract for a mobile phone. Regardless of your credit history, there are a number of simple steps you can take to get yourself a pay monthly bad credit mobile phone contract.

Whenever you apply for a mobile phone contract, you will be subject to a credit check before your application is approved. This is true for every UK network operator and is required to help prevent fraudulent applications and also to make sure potential customers have a past history of making repayments on time and in full.

So what if you have a bad credit history?

Even if you are suffering from bad credit that does not mean you won't be able to get a pay monthly contract phone from one of the major mobile networks.

It is also true that even if you have been rejected by one company, it doesn't mean that you would immediately be turned down by another.

Although every network operator will run a credit check on your application, the important thing to note is that they do not all use the same credit checking criteria.

Each mobile network has their own credit checking criteria and some are harder to be approved than others.

The trick is knowing which network is more likely to approve people with a less than perfect credit history.

    Virgin Mobile

Virgin Mobile are probably the most lenient company to approach for pay monthly contract phones with bad credit history. Many people have been successful in obtaining a mobile phone contract when applying with them - despite suffering from adverse credit. T Mobile operate on a lower credit scoring system compared with other networks and you are by no means guaranteed for approval, but you have a greater chance of being accepted for a mobile phone contract compared to other networks.

You are by no means guaranteed for approval of course. This will depend entirely on your individual circumstances. However, Virgin Mobile have a better acceptance rate than some of the other networks and this means that you have a greater chance of being accepted for a mobile phone contract - if your credit rating is less than perfect.

Rather than apply through a third party website or retailer such as Carphone Warehouse or Phones4U, it is recommended that you apply directly on their website for the best chance of being approved for a contract phone.

    3 Mobile

Along with Virgin Mobile, 3 Mobile are one of the most sympathetic in being able to provide bad credit contract phones. Since they were first established in 2003, many people with a less than perfect credit rating have been successful in getting a contract phone with 3 Mobile despite being refused elsewhere.

3 Mobile will automatically approve applications from people with a credit rating of over 750 out of 1000. If your credit score is between 650-750, they will manually review your application and ask that you pay a deposit before being accepted (find out your credit score for free here). The deposit you will be asked to pay will depend on your own individual circumstances and can vary from £50-200

Similar to Virgin, the choice of handset you choose will play a large part in whether your application is accepted or declined. The cheaper the handset you apply for, the more chance you have of being approved.

    Tips To Improve Your Application

Tip #1 – Opt for a low cost phone and tariff plan.

When it comes to the different mobile phone networks, the criteria for checking credit all depends on the mobile contract you opt for.

When applying, the required credit is based upon the specific phone and calling plan you choose and each network requires a different amount. If you choose a higher priced package it will be more difficult to get approved.

Pay monthly mobile contracts work just a cash loan - the higher the amount you wish to borrow (in this case the cost of the mobile phone), the better the credit rating required. If you apply with the main networks Virgin Mobile or 3 Mobile it is important to avoid applying with expensive handsets such as the latest Apple iPhone.

In regards to value for the network, an example of a less expensive package that consists of a SIM card contract is a value of £10 per month as opposed to an Apple iPhone for £45 monthly contract.

Fewer perks on the phone and a cheaper calling plan will make getting the contract more accessible even if you have a history of bad credit.

(Until you improve your credit rating, there is a possibility of not being able to get your hopes up of getting the newest Apple iPhone with a contract of £45 a month!)

You may have to pay a deposit up front and there is no guarantee that you will get a contract with these networks. The chances of being approved are increased if you opt for the lower priced phone and a lower priced calling plan.

Tip #2 Apply For SIM Only Contracts

Many of those who apply for mobile phone contracts and have a bad history try to get some of the best phones and the most expensive phone plans. The truth is, that with a poor credit score it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to get these best deals, simply because you are posing a risk to the networks who aren’t sure whether you can afford to pay. However, if you want to get most of the benefits of some of the top mobile phone plans where you can get approved, you should consider some sim only mobile phone contracts.

The networks are much more likely to approve your application simply because these contracts do not come with a free phone – and this free phone would have been where the risk lay for the mobile network.

Secondly, if you did fall behind on your payments then they could easily block your sim card until you paid. The mobile networks have much more control over this kind of phone contract, meaning that you pose a lot less risk and they are therefore a lot more likely to approve you without sending you a valuable phone.
