Greener UK parliamentary reception

On 22 February 2017, Greener UK held a parliamentary reception attended by 125 people, including MPs, peers, senior environmental representatives, civil servants and businesses to discuss the critical environmental protections and policies affected by the UK exiting the EU.

  1. Greener UK is a group of 13 major environmental organisations, with a combined public membership of 7.9 million, united in the belief that leaving the EU is a pivotal moment to restore and enhance the UK’s environment.
  2. Greener UK's manifesto was launched at the event, setting out the eight actions necessary to make the vision of a greener UK a reality. Over 200 MPs from all parties have signed Greener UK's pledge for the environment.
  3. Organisations showcased four priority areas for the UK as it leaves the EU: food and farming; fisheries and marine; climate and energy; and environment and wildlife laws.
  4. MPs and peers from across the political spectrum attended the reception, including Scott Mann MP and Kerry McCarthy MP.
  5. Henry Smith MP hosted the event, introducing the speakers and stressing the importance of transposing environmental law through the Repeal Bill.
  6. This was followed by speeches from George Eustice MP, minister of state for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, chair of the Commons Select Committee on Exiting the EU and Dame Helen Ghosh, director-general of National Trust .

  24. The event was also an opportunity for MPs to support The Climate Coalition’s #ShowTheLove campaign with its iconic green hearts.
  25. MPs from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales attended the event, including Jim Shannon MP, Margaret Ferrier MP and Jeff Smith MP.
