The 2015 Food Sovereignty Gathering - another food system is possible!

The UK's food sovereignty movement is growing faster than ever, with hundreds of projects thriving across the country. To share progress made and plan for the future, a Food Sovereignty Gathering was held in Hebden Bridge.

  1. The gathering was organised by a group of volunteers from the broad food sovereignty movement including Community Centred Knowledge, Community Food Growers Network, Food Sovereignty Sussex, Global Justice Now, Incredible Edible Todmorden, the Land Workers’ Alliance, the UK Food Group, War on Want, Wild Heart Permaculture and the Workers' Educational Association.
  2. The event started on 23 October. One of the sessions in the first evening was a film showing about the food sovereignty movement in Ghana. There was a great turn out and a fascinating discussion. You can watch the films here:
  3. Whoever controls seeds, controls the food system
  4. The next day's welcoming plenary was held with over 200 people stuffed into the venue. The discussions that followed hammered out priorities for the movement.
  5. A series of workshops covered a range of subjects, including seeds, agroecology, food and poverty, sustainable procurement, carribean cooking, food growing and hip hop, food growing in Scotland etc.
  6. And the Landworkers' Alliance hosted a workshop looking at national food policy:
  7. Many practical ideas came out of the workshops:
  8. The momentum continued into Sunday, where the passion and energy was focused into developing action plans to make the vision of food sovereignty a reality.
  9. Even TTIP was discussed, showing how invasive this toxic trade deal is:
  10. We now know - more than ever - that a new food system is possible. Thanks to everyone that took part in another amazing Food Sovereignty Gathering.
