  1. This Fulbright Amizade service learning project, now in its second year, increases mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by forging a meaningful connection between these Fulbrighters and local American community leaders. The service learning focus highlights the importance of volunteerism in the United States and how communities in Appalachia are pioneering ways to maintain their cultural framework while also creating new economic opportunities.

  3. Williamson, West Virginia is a small, rural coal-mining town once home to 10,000 residents and a thriving coal economy. In recent years, Williamson has experienced a collapsed coal mining industry, a series of devastating floods, and de-population. Now with a population of 3,000, Williamson residents have joined together to create Sustainable Williamson, a local organization working to redefine the economic landscape of the central Appalachian coalfields and create a replicable model of sustainability through community revitalization. Amizade Global Service Learning, through its partnership with Sustainable Williamson, led the Fulbrighters on their week-long program, during which they engaged in service projects and discussions with community members who shared their perspectives on the issues this Appalachian community faces, as well as their proactive solutions.
