Instagram Story: My First Solo Unit

This Storify project will go over the experience of planning and executing my first wholly independent unit without support from my CT. It's focused on the lesson materials I created throughout the unit. Photos taken throughout unit and then uploaded to Instagram after completion of the unit.

  2. This unit was daunting for a variety of reasons. In addition to being the first unit I would be taking sole responsibility for, I had to center my unit around a standard that calls for students to be able to analyze the last 70 years in most of the world (Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa.)
  3. I also had just under three weeks to accomplish this goal, as the last several weeks of the class would be spent on a career skills and interests unit.
  4. Needless to say, there was a little bit of stress on my part from the very beginning.
  5. Students got the directions for their summative project the first day, and were expected to make progress toward it each week on this checklist:
  6. This proved to be more of a struggle than I initially expected.
  7. Now that I've got their interest, let's get this globe-hopping unit underway! #edss530ig

  8. At the same time, I had to work on getting my recordings for TPA 4, which was just an extra challenge, but I think worked out pretty well (fingers crossed)!
  9. I found that my students were really interested in the One-Child Policy in China, and so I spent the night before the second day moving activities around and adjusting my plans so we could spend the next day examining that policy more in-depth.
  10. While the slight tinge of improvisation was a thrill, it's not one I would like to contend with regularly.
  11. That's all the time we had for China, now on to India! #edss530ig

  12. The two most populous countries in the world, over the course of the most rapidly-advancing century in human history. In a week. My students and I are all qualified to be auctioneers after the breakneck pace we kept in discussions.
  13. I also wanted the students to see how the topics we were covering were still actively shifting in the world around them, so I tried to bring in current event articles and news clips whenever possible.
  14. Big risk today... not sure students can handle the individual freedom, but we'll see... #edss530ig

  15. I wanted to incorporate more technology into this unit, but I was limited by the school's lackluster technology facilities. Working around that, we had a Bring Your Own Device day in class.
  16. I was worried about the students' ability to stay focused and stay off of Snapchat, but other than one student playing Clash of Clans, it was a success!
  17. Just a glimpse of how fast we have to move through regions of the world... going through africa and into the middle east this week. #edss530ig

  18. Week Two: The entire continent of Africa and a bit of the most complex geopolitical quagmire in the world today. No time to waste! KNOWLEDGE AWAITS!
  19. Giving students a chance to consider other perspectives... #edss530ig

  20. With all of the macro issues we were talking about (terrorism, poverty, etc), I wanted students to be able to connect to the people living in these regions as well... Thankfully I was able to "adapt" a photo series on what families around the world eat each week, which gave them a bit of common ground.
  21. Now putting together an activity to show them how these remote regions relate to their lives... #edss530ig
