CoR gets a grip on key topics in the 115th CoR plenary

Debates and reports focused on #migrationEU #COP21, and #CovenantofMayors, #EUgrowth and #EUjobs

  1. In the wake of the Paris attacks the opening of the plenary took a contemplative mood.
  2. But the attention on Paris was not all sad, as the Regions once again registered their support for ambitious targets for COP21, the UN's climate change conference.
  3. This complimented two timely opinions read and approved by the plenary. The first promoting The future of the Covenant of Mayors by Kata Tüttő .
  4. And the second: Contribution to the fitness check on the EU Birds and Habitats Directives by Roby Biwer.
  5. The other big debate was around migration, timely not least because we had just launched our migration sub-site.
  6. The full debate, with Dimitris Avramopoulos, Commissioner on Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship and Kashetu Kyenge, MEP (IT/S&D) can be found on the website along with heaps of info from regional heads dealing with the refugee crisis.
  7. Some of the key messages from the debate were.
  8. The debate was held prior to the adoption of the European Agenda on Migration opinion, by François Decoster, which Mr Avramopoulos, "fully endorsed".
  9. And so did the members (luckily)
  10. A second Commissioner, Frans Timmermans, First Vice-president of the European Commission, who is no stranger to the CoR's plenaries, attended to debate about the Commission's new Work programme, among other things.
  11. There were some questions asked and demands made by members.
  12. But in the end Timmermans clearly endorsed the work of regions and some key initiatives:
