Commissioners galore at the 114th #CoRPlenary

It started with #Opendays, got going with debates on #MigrationEU, Agriculture and the Digital Single Market and closed with the Energy Union - with a lot more inbetween.

  1. We had a busy week, what with the launch of the annual OPEN DAYS and the (roughly) bimonthly CoR Plenary: making it truly a week of Regions and Cities.
  2. But here's the trick: although OPEN DAYS 2015 was launched at the start of October's CoR Plenary, and CoR members and Regional experts attended both, and there was some overlap in the agendas, they were separate things:
  3. The subtle difference baffled many, but luckily Twitter was ready to correct the mistake.
  4. And when in doubt, just tag both.
  5. So what was the difference? Well OPEN DAYS – European Week of Regions and Cities lasted four-days and is characterised by an agenda populated with panel meetings and conferences during which the focus is on EU regions ability to implement growth and cohesion policy.
  6. It's also a good time to remind people what the Committee of the Regions is about.
  7. So it's a big annual event, which is cohosted by the European Commission's regional directorate, and so we had Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Creţu, together with European Commissioner for Innovation and Research Carlos Moedas talk to CoR plenary about building synergies between EU investments in research and innovation, as part of Open Days. Phew! Are you following?
  8. And during which they were reacquainted with old (robotic) friends.
  9. And started up some new initiatives.
  10. So normal CoR plenary activity was postponed until Tuesday and included: debating policy, adopting Opinions, reports and resolutions (which are all documents that note CoR's position on various EU topics. We have around 6 plenaries a year (and we're now on our 114th).
  11. So first, the debates: many of these were led by Commissioners. The stand-out was Federica Mogherini , High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. And of course migration was members' top concerns.
