SciConnect Unlikely Jargon Competition

What does the word "model" mean to you? If you're a biologist, probably an animal model; a geophysicist might think of a computer model, while a non-scientist have James Bond in mind. Not all science jargon is easy to spot: some masquerades as everyday words...

  1. We announced the competition part-way through our session at the ESOF 2012 conference, and had suggestions coming in within a couple of minutes. The competitive spirit was much in evidence :)
  2. @CT_Microbiol @SciConnect mwah ha ha. I've got a whole collaboration wall of words to choose from. Do your worst..
  3. @SciConnect #ESOF2012 MOLE! Very confusing scientific word: spy, mass of Avogadro’s number, burrowing animal, benign growth & green chip dip
  4. @SciConnect "Arousal" during sleep resulting from breathing problems - always raised an eyebrow during my PhD presentations! #ESOF2012
  5. @SciConnect buffer: keeps incompatible things apart / a pH-change-resistant sol'n. Bonus:buffer in French is tampon + means what you think
  6. Ideas were still coming in shortly before the deadline...
  7. RT @DVDGC13: Plasma: in physics it's ionized matter (like fire), in medicine is part of blood, and for general public a big flat tv #sciconnect
  8. RT @DVDGC13: Abstract: in art something not understandable... in science the same but shorter ;-) #sciconnect
  9. RT @DVDGC13: Integrate: a math operation, and get friends.. That's why e^x was always alone #sciconnect
  10. RT @aherne_margaret: “Chip”:Platform for medical testing (2me), silicon technology (elec. engineer), goes with fish on Fridays! (my Gran) #sciconnect
  11. It was a tough call, but in the end, we decided that we had a winner:
  12. RT @SciConnect: Win! MT @DVDGC13: Plasma: in physics, it's ionized matter, in medicine is part of blood, and for general public a big flat tv #sciconnect
  13. Many thanks to everyone who took part! We really enjoyed interacting with and reading all your ideas, hope you had fun too.

As a postscript Sara Shinton has turned the competition Twitter stream into a cool word cloud
