Pope Francis visits Mediterranean refugees, calls for repentance over treatment of migrants

Today Pope Francis made a short but significant trip to Lampedusa, a small Italian island halfway between Sicily and North Africa, to pray for refugees who have lost their lives at sea and to call the church to greater solidarity with them.

  1. As if to highlight the plight of Mediterranean refugees, even before the pope arrived for his morning visit another boat landed with dozens more.
  2. CNS Rome photographer Paul Haring was there today and caught this image of today's refugees just off their boat.
  3. Meanwhile, the pope headed out onto the Mediterranean for prayer.
  4. Later, Pope Francis returned to port to greet other refugees.
  5. Then it was time for Mass.
