This session will examine the ways in which black women use performance art as a way of reclaiming sexual agency. Attention will be paid to pornography, hip-hop and specifically burlesque. Although the “jezebel” has been a negative stereotype put on black women, it is also an image that is being reclaimed and transformed in order to help black women navigate their own sexualities and gain profit. This session will examine hip-hop music videos (Nikki Minaj, Rihanna & Kelly Rowland), burlesque performances (including my own) and images of black women within pornography. It will consist of a power point presentation drawing upon personal experiences, pop culture references, research findings, music video and image viewings and end off with a facilitated discussion with hopes of open dialogue from listeners as well as a question and answer session.
