Singer-songwriter Tom Petty dies at age 66

Tom Petty, an old-fashioned rock superstar and everyman who drew upon the Byrds, the Beatles and other bands he worshipped as a boy and produced new classics such as "Free Fallin,' "Refugee" and "American Girl," has died. He was 66.


  1. Tom Petty, one of the biggest hitmakers from the 1970s and '80s has died after suffering a heart attack.
  2. Petty died Monday night at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles a day after he suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu, California.
  3. Petty and his longtime band the Heartbreakers had recently ended a 40th anniversary tour, which he had hinted would be the last. They played the Hollywood Bowl just a couple of weeks ago and were scheduled to play shows in New York in November:

  5. Petty was best known as the lead singer of the Heartbreakers, but was also part of the 1980s group The Traveling Wilburys, which included music heavyweights Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison.
  6. His contemporaries and younger musicians inspired by him shared their sorrow. Petty died on the same day as the Las Vegas massacre killed 59 people and injured more than 500:
