  1. Justin and Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau met the Pope, and while there were dozens of photos of their meet and greet, this photo with the Pope appearing not-so-happy seems to have caught the Internet's eye:
  2. Trudeau says he asked the Pope for a formal apology for the role the Catholic Church played in Canada's residential school system in the last century. Some children suffered abuse at the government-funded residential schools, which took indigenous children from their homes and forced them to live away from their parents in an effort to erase their culture. Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper gave a formal government apology for the schools in 2008.
  3. Some wondered whether asking for an apology had anything to do with the Pope's expression:
  4. While many people focused on the Papal frown, photos from the meeting show the Pope's expressions ranging from full-out-laugh to neutral to frowning:

  6. Some compared the photo of the Trudeaus to the viral photo of Donald Trump and his family meeting the Pontiff last week:
  7. The Trumps were widely criticized last week after many interpreted the photo as a sign that Trump had soured the Pope's mood. People online speculated on what the photo with Trudeau actually means:
  8. Others went further, dissecting pictures of the Pope meeting previous world leaders:
  9. There was similar debate about which photo truly captured the essence of a meeting back in February when Trudeau and Trump met for the first time. Two Canadian Press photos showed different points in time, and some people on the Internet chose one out of context and ran with it:
