The breakdown:
- A normal range for a platelet count is 150,000-450,000 per microliter of blood, according to the Mayo Clinic, but with ITP, a count can drop to 0. ITP can either be chronic (it never goes away), or acute (onset is quick and lasts less than about a year). The decrease in platelets is caused by the body's own immune response, where the antibodies that are meant to protect one from infection recognize the own body's platelets as a threat.
It comes with hardcord bruises. Like, REALLY hardcore.
- September is ITP Awareness month! The pictures are just a few bruises I've have in the past year because of it. Itp is a rare bleeding disorder in which your antibodies attack your platelets killing them off for an unknown reason, leaving you with a low number of platelets which can become very dangerous. But it's much more complicated than a few sentences. I personally don't know anyone else who also has this disorder. Instagram has actually been very helpful for finding others who know what it's like! Spread the awareness, learn more about it! http://www.pdsa.org/contribute/raise-awareness-for-itp/itp-awareness-month.html #itp #itpawarenessmonth #itpawareness #idiopathicthrombocytopenicpurpura #bleedingdisorder #purpleforplatelets
It wears all shapes and sizes:
And, as you can see, it has a lot of support out there:
Still overwhelmed from my 5k yesterday to "Pump It Up For Platelets"! Met some amazing supporters, heard the testimony of an amazingly strong family who lost their 8 year daughter to a brain bleed, and Team Taylor raised $845 in less than a week towards the fight against ITP!! #itp #itpawareness #SportPurple4Platelets #PDSA
Day 3 of facts for ITP awareness month : Platelets are produced in your bone marrow just like your red and white blood cells. A healthy persons platelets will survive in the blood stream for about 7 days however a person with ITP their platelets are destroyed much more quickly. Why? Well ITP occurs when certain immune system cells produce antibodies against platelets. The antibodies attach to the platelet and the spleen destroys them becuase they are abnormal and the body thinks it's an invader. This is why some people have their spleens removed or their spleens are enlarged (as in my case). #themoreyouknow #awareness #itp #itpawareness #gotplatelets #platelets #wherepurple #donateplatelets #bleedingdisorder
What is ITP? Basically, a bleeding disorder with a bad attitude.
ITP is a little-known bleeding disorder in which a person's body doesn't have enough platelets, the cells that make blood clot. It is an autoimmune disease (it's not contagious) and affects 10 times more people than hemophilia. There is no guaranteed cure and many treatments come with side effects.
