Susan Herringer explains what it's like to be a pioneer in the Open Graduate Education Program: Before applying to the program, I was already navigating the waters between materials science and archaeology; I was interacting between the tw...o fields -- taking classes and participating in research in both departments. The classes I have taken in archaeology and the people I have met over the last three years have introduced me to new perspectives into examining past cultures. --Herringer is pursing a PhD in Engineering (Materials Science), and a Master’s of Arts in Archaeology and the Ancient World.See More

The Open Graduate Program allows me to build my own course of study and work across departments and disciplines.   9. Showing Sept. 26-Oct. 6: 'Water by the Spoonful' in the Leeds Theatre. Brown MFA alum Quiara Alegría Hudes won a 2012 Pulitzer Prize for this play that follows a young Puerto Rican ex-marine returning from Iraq to a family struggling with addiction. Set in Philadelphia and the virtual world, Spoonful explores family in a twenty-first century world. Tickets: brown.edu/go/tickets
  10. Graduate Student Orientation featured a welcome from Provost Mark S. Schlissel and Graduate School Dean Peter M. Weber, on Friday, August 30. The Graduate School's incoming class of 639 new students includes 263 pursuing doctoral degrees and 376 entering master's programs.
  11. Maggie Hennefeld, doctoral student in Modern Culture & Media, sits next to the over 100 reels of 35mm film she watched in 4 days at the British Film Institute in London. Viewing the film (based from 1895-1920) was research for her dissertation about comedy theory, gender, and silent film historiography.
