British Beard and Moustache Championship 2012

Britain's best moustaches and beards gathered in Brighton on September 15, 2012, to compete for 11 titles. More than 100 competitors took to the stage at the city's Corn Exchange. Follow the journey in tweets, pictures, news stories and more.

  1. News of the first British Beard and Moustache Championships started spreading through social media from February, and caught the ears of a few national organisations. ITV4 screening the American TV show Whisker Wars, helped gather interest in British competitive facial hair.

Committee chairman David Dade found himself chatting with BBC Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton. She loves a good beard. David also waxed lyrical about beard metal on Total Rock.

British Beard Club founder Frazer Coppin and David took to the small screen, too, as they were a talking point on the Rob Brydon Show.

It wasn't all about the beards as Handlebar Club scribe Tom Cutler appeared on various radio programmes and called upon the national and international media to take notice... and they did.

A number of competitors contacted their local newspapers to tell their beard and moustache tales.
