Why Black Lives Matter and Gay Tories Don't

  1. In case you missed it, an amazing thing happened at the Toronto Pride parade today. Leading the parade as a honoured group, Black Lives Matter activists staged a 30-minute sit-in and brought the march to a halt.
  2. Their short action was strategic -- and effective. The Executive Director of Pride Toronto signed off on all of BLM-TO's demands. You can read them below. They are consistent with BLM's commitment to ending police violence, fighting racism, and making the LGBT community a safer and more just place for queer/trans people of colour.
  3. Annoyed at having to spend half an hour waiting, gay conservative columnist Sue-Ann Levy threw a tantrum in the Toronto Sun, claiming that gay conservatives are the ones who are truly oppressed. I shit you not.
  4. No seriously, I could not make this up if I tried.
  5. Understandably, queers on Twitter took it upon themselves to school dear Sue on the history of the queer community's struggle against police violence.
  6. Then I stepped in ...
  7. Then "Dear Sue" started to respond and shit got weird.
  8. And then the kicker. From a dude who once worked closely with the gay marriage lobby in Canada.
  9. Just a reminder. The first Pride was a riot.
