Elon Musk's Los Angeles underground tunnels seem far-fetched, but according to twitter the first segment is complete

Entrepreneur Elon Musk, who is chief executive officer of high-tech companies SpaceX and Tesla, tweeted yesterday that his underground tunnel project in Los Angeles is well underway.

  1. The project addresses "soul-destroying" traffic in L.A. His vision is to dig deep tunnels under the city so cars can be transported to their respective destinations in a faster manner.
  2. Tunnel experts, however, have cast doubts on his plans.
  3. He got a hold of a boring machine and is currently digging a 500-foot tunnel on his property in Hawthorne as a test before digging through the streets of L.A. That test tunnel could be what he is referring to in his tweet. However, he can't dig anything off his property until he gets a permit from the City of Hawthorne. And even then, he can't start digging in L.A. until he gets a permit from that city, too.
  4. Many twitter users were also skeptical about the plan and Musk's tweet yesterday. Multiple tweets responded asking for photos.
  5. While others asked for a map or official plan.
  6. Other tweets were more sarcastic and snarky.
  7. But some did have some positive things to say.
  8. And others couldn't resist the opportunity to make evil underground lair and digging jokes.
