Commuters, pedestrians and bicyclists respond to Vista del Mar lane increase

Councilman Mike Bonin, who sits on Council District 11 which includes communities of Del Rey, Mar Vista, Marina del Rey and more, announced that the Vista del Mar stretch, which was reduced to two lanes a few months ago, will go back to being four lanes, two southbound and two northbound.

  1. The move to reverse the road diet was made because of backlash from commuters who found themselves stuck in traffic due to the lane decrease.
  2. However, Bonin also mentioned that work to make Pershing, Culver and Jefferson safer will be looked at. One option includes reducing speeds.
  3. Responses to that were mostly negative and focused on grueling commutes and traffic.
  4. Some, mostly bicyclists, were encouraging of road diets and against the move to bring Playa Del Vista back to four lanes.
  5. As for what's next, some are asking what will be done for pedestrian and biker safety.
  6. While others acknowledge that roads are already a nightmare and safety measures might not even help.
  7. But then, of course, let's not forget the *possible* big one.
