  1. On April 14, 2014, Boko Haram, an Islamic extremist group, designated as a terrorist group by many countries including the US, kidnapped over 300 school girls from their dormitory in northern Nigeria.
  2. Initially, the army claimed to have freed most of the girls but had to retract their claim when the parents of the girls protested that their children had not been found.
  3. Nigerians were outraged. A protest movement gradually started with the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls.
