  3. A bit o' Lemony Snicket for this BOOKENDS:⠀
⠀
The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming⠀
McSweeney’s, San Francisco, California, 2007⠀
⠀
Latkes are potato pancakes served at Hanukkah, and Lemony Snicket is an alleged children’s author. For the first time in literary history, these two elements are combined in one book. A particularly irate latke is the star of The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming, but many other holiday icons appear and even speak: flashing colored lights, cane-shaped candy, a pine tree. The ending is happy, at least for some.⠀
⠀
Collections: 50 Books/50 Covers of 2007⠀
Repository: @DenverArtMuseum⠀
⠀
Design firm: @mcswys⠀
Art director: Eli Horowitz⠀
Designer: Lisa Brown⠀
Illustrator: Lisa Brown⠀
Author: Lemony Snicket⠀
Publisher: McSweeney’s⠀
⠀
Juror Notes: Hilarious, sophisticated, and wonderfully quirky. This book is great!!! AAAHHHHHH!!! ⠀

  7. The Giant’s House⠀
Michael Ian Kaye, Brooklyn, New York, 1996⠀
⠀
The Giant’s House is a novel about a romance between a giant and a librarian. The awkwardly placed library card serves as a metaphor for their ill-fitted relationship, while the lively colors reflect the promise of love. Combined with the simple typographic solution, all of these elements reflect the colorful yet reserved writing style of Elizabeth McCracken.⠀

  10. “I had to get past the dull and tasteless cover, and into the inside of this book, before I realized its special quality. It is a textbook, intended for use by school children. I would like to go back to school now, not only in order to escape the cares of the world, but in order that I might do my learning out of textbooks as wonderfully well prepared as this one.⠀
⠀
“The type of the text is brave and bold and readable, the typographic ornamentation is bold and pleasing, many diverse units are gathered by the designer into a splendid unification.⠀
⠀
“There is a wondrous quality about this textbook. It seems to me that the child who picks it up must become interested immediately in the scheme of the illustrations and the clear presentation of the subject. I think it more than “interesting,” I think it exciting, that the publishers of our textbooks are beginning to discover the sales value of good book design.” ⠀
