  1. It was suffragette Emily Wilding Davison’s birthday on Saturday 11th October, which is now also International Day of the Girl.
  2. In an already auspicious week, Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2014 "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education" something Emily, who trained as a teacher, was also passionate about.

  4. With the 2015 UK general election on the horizon, we thought it would be a good idea to get lots of positive #votingmatters messages, photos and clips onto social media as a means of celebrating Emily's birthday as well as raise awareness of our democratic right, which is still denied to many around the world today.
  5. Happy Birthday to Emily Wilding Davison - Suffragette campaigner for democracy.
  6. Given that #votingmatters globally, it was great to get contributions from across the UK and around the world.
  7. In addition to #votingmatters photos, we asked for #DearLauren messages for a first time voter.
  8. Who is Lauren? Lauren's a student in Glasgow. As a seventeen year old, she was a first time voter in the Independence Referendum.
  9. Why does Lauren matter? Because she's not alone. At the last general election only 39% of young women aged 18-24 voted, whilst just 20% of BAME young women used their right to vote.
  10. Hear Lauren's story in her own words:
  11. The following is a record of the fantastic response to our call out for #DearLauren messages and #votingmatters tweets & photos. We will also be posting more #DearLauren messages on the website.
  12. Dear Lauren,
You just have to think about what you care about and you can make your change, however small.
