App.net is now (crowd)funded. First thing first, change that name!

It looks like I'm not the only one to think that the name app.net (@AppDotNet) is terrible. Read on...

  1. First off, I love the initiative. Instead of keeping complaining about Twitter recent moves, @daltonc went to go build something. I'm backer, Storify is a backer and you should too. http://join.app.net
  2. 50 hours left, $50k needed. Support AppDotNet. It's not abt being anti one thing, it's about building another thing join.app.net
  3. Kellan (ETSY CTO) is one of the backers. He also backed Diaspora which was another project to create a different social network but unfortunately it didn't go anywhere. He has a very good point though:
  4. I backed app.net for the same reason I backed Diaspora. They widen, even in failure, the Overton window of the conceivable Webs
  5. Celebrities (Stephen Fry, Michael Arrington, ...) are also part of the movement
  6. Just joined app.net - exciting new crowd funded, social microblogging service - go to join.app.net
  7. This morning, they finally reached the $500k mark. Congrats!
  8. Now the first thing they should do is change their name. Honestly, App.net is a terrible name and it looks like I'm not the only one who thinks so:
  9. They made it. I would’ve bet against it last week. Congrats app.net, now pick a new name. http://pic.twitter.com/wzvwlTZw
  10. Backed App.net. Not sure about name or the Zuckerberg-wannabe founder. But something does need to change join.app.net/lsdmlmrs
  11. @AppDotNet Congratulations guys. Worth reconsidering the name though.
  12. The following people have a very good point: you can't use app.net as a verb:
  13. I think @appdotnet (funded in approx 2 hrs) needs a better service name. Like STATE, SAY, WHISPER so people can use their name as a verb.
  14. I think @AppDotNet needs a name that can be a verb. I tweeted = I…posted to app dot net? I dot netted?
  15. Hi @AppDotNet! Congratulations on reaching your funding goal! I have a question: Is the name of your service final or just a code name?
  16. @andydavies Same here, went for the dev tier :-) Needs a name change, though. App.net is probably coldest name ever. +@daltonc
  17. Also: App.net is pretty bad name for microblogging service. That and price are only two "real" criticism I have.
  18. I would have backed app.net if it wasn’t for its ridiculous name.
  19. Here is a good post on how to name your startup by @JoelGascoigne, founder of @BufferApp:
