5 Xeriscaping Tips For Desert Yards

So you were forced to change your greenery into a desert friendly environment? Where do you start? There has to be more to it than placing a few cacti plants here and there.

  1. Before executing this process you should analyze your land and decide how much of it you want to convert.  Once that has been determined proceed to look over the landscape, map out the area of use and purchase xeriscaping plants appropriate for the desert land.
  2. Consider visiting a home depot or specialty store which carries an array of desert friendly plants.  Try plants such as wildflowers, cacti, succulents and shrubs.  Wildflowers and select cacti will add color to your land.  Xeriscaping does not only have to be about bland green plants or boring traditional cacti that can be found anywhere.  Make your place look unique with inspiring and funky plants that have bright pops of color.  Many cacti and succulents generate red, orange and pink flowers.  Some plants may even compliment the color of your home, car or shutters.
  3. Crown of thorns, desert rose, cactus - all plants seen here are from $180 to $800 http://t.co/kaIIVybv

  4. Once the plants are selected it is easy to formulate a plot for them.  It is best to buy an ample supply of the same types of plants for symmetry.  Once the placement has been selected, the ground should be prepared for the planting.  The soil should be tilled and mixed with crystals (that can be found at the same stores, which carry desert plants).  The crystals will absorb water when it does rain and store it in the soil so it can slowly be released to the plants as needed.

  6. The crystals will be a great addition when trying to keep desert plants refreshingly satisfied.  Other ideas for water supply would be building slopes by the plants that can direct water toward them when it rains.  Additionally, an irrigation system will need to be set up before proceeding.  This should be aimed toward specific plants and used in moderation since these types of plants only need to be watered occasionally.  It is better to underwater a cactus than it is to over water it; cacti really only need to be watered twice monthly.  This is what makes them a nice low maintenance yard accessory.   Mulch is also an option that can lock in moisture and decrease maintenance time.
  7. Lastly, add fillers such as large and small rocks.  Chose rocks of different colors; rust colored rocks can added some extra spunky color and contrast.  Rocks Las Vegas can be purchased to bring the entire look together.  Smaller pebbles can help to fill in smaller gaps between plants.  Long succulents look great wrapped around stones as well.
  8. Make your home desert friendly by either coordinating your own xeriscape or getting professionals to analyze and decorate your yard space.  Desert landscapes can be a fabulous addition to a new or old home.
