1. On July 18th, 2017, WCA celebrated the passing of Raise the Age law in New York by hosting their annual Summer Celebration in honor of their partners who made it happen.
  2. The celebration took place at The First Baptist Church of White Plains. Jim St. Germain, author of newly-released memoir: "A Stone of Hope," held a reading and book signing. Entertainment was also provided by DJ Lord Judah.
  3. WCA was thrilled to be celebrating the passing of a law which raises the age of adult criminal responsibility to 18. It also ensures that young people who are already in the adult criminal justice system are now moved into the juvenile justice system where they can access age-appropriate interventions. Prior to this law, New York and North Carolina were the only two states in the U.S. to charge 16- & 17-year olds as adults.
  4. RTA law increases the number of cases brought before the Family Court and introduces a Youth Part in the adult court for more serious crimes. Parents will now be notified when their 16- or 17-year-old is arrested and there will be more resources available for youth offenders. This includes allowing for retroactive sealing, expanding access to youthful offender (YO) status and raising the YO eligibility to 21, as well as, increasing investments in diversion services that keep youth in their communities rather than incarceration.
  5. After four years of advocating, their hard work finally paid off.
  6. Before RTA law, nearly 28,000 16- & 17-year-olds who were arrested faced the possibility of prosecution as adults in criminal court each year – the vast majority for minor crimes (72% are misdemeanors). More than 600 13 to 15-year-olds were also processed in adult criminal courts. This law gives them a better chance for a positive future, and it makes our communities safer by reducing the number of re-offenders.
  7. There is still a lot to work to do, but getting the age raised to 18 is the first step in the right direction.
  8. The Summer Celebration kicked off at 4:30 with music by DJ Lord Judah, a photobooth, and pizza provided by Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza.
