Virginia Senate Vote on Redistricting

A series of confused tweets documenting the surprise redistricting of the Virginia Senate, introduced by Republicans to take advantage of a civil rights leader and Democratic Senator being absent, at the inauguration.

  1. I’m watching a floor fight over redistricting in the Virginia Senate. Sen. Watkins is basically filibustering to prevent opposition.
  2. VA Senate Dems are pissed. They seem to be plotting something.
  3. A redistricting bill is being amended by Senate Republicans during the last reading, with no hearing or public input.
  4. @erinmonaghan @jmckeever Somebody just referred to the “new sixth district” under this bill.
  5. VA Sen. Republicans, having taken control of the Senate, are trying to redistrict again, this time in their favor.
  6. VA Senate Dems moved to put off the redistricting vote by 1 day so they could actually read the bill. The motion failed, 19–20.
  7. VA Senate just passed a redistricting bill, introduced a few hours ago, that nobody has read, on a 20–19 vote.
