1. Big Data Innovations for Sustainable Development
  2. On 16 January 2017, UN Global Pulse organized a session on the opportunities and challenges that new data sources hold in implementing the 2030 Agenda.
  3. Session TA2.04 Big data innovations
  4. The session kicked off with a presentation of innovation projects and displays of data visualizations and big data analysis from Global Pulse's three labs in New York, Indonesia and Uganda.
  5. A panel discussion with representatives from the government, UN and private sector then explored the opportunities that big data innovations present in today’s complex world.
  6. Speakers of the panel included:

    - Juan Murillo Arias, Territorial Analysis Manager, BBVA Data & Analytics
    - Arif Husain, Chief Economist and Director, Food Security, World Food Programme (WFP)
  8. Panelists discussed short-term opportunities for data innovation and how to better seize them through partnerships, government involvement and a better understanding of the advantages of using data.
  9. They stressed that measuring and achieving the SDGs demands new technologies and innovations that can integrate and complement traditional statistics.
  10. The session concluded with a compilation of data innovation resources and initiatives presented by UN and private sector colleagues.

  11. Working with Big Data and New Data Sources
  12. UN Global Pulse and ESRI, an international supplier of GIS software, organized a session on 17 January 2017 on Working with Big Data and New Data Sources. The session showcased successful data innovation projects and applications for the advancement of the SDGs.
  13. The session gathered more than 130 participants and included a display of interactive visualizations from ESRI and Global Pulse’s labs.

    Mining radio content for enhanced decision making
    - Using financial transaction data to measure economic resilience to natural disasters
    - Haze crisis analysis and visualisation tool for disaster management
