Sam Sommers' Author Talk

Students, parents and families joined Tufts Professor Sam Sommers last Friday for his author talk in Tisch Library

  1. Live from Tisch library, we're tweeting Sam Sommers' lecture on "Situations Matter"--stay tuned! http://pic.twitter.com/HvE0P2bN
  2. And we're off! Talking about "the psychology of everyday life"
  3. "We are too often not aware of the context in which we find ourselves." The power of context is hidden, yet it's right in front of us
  4. What we see in others: personality type, consistent character, stable predisposition...this is how we judge people all the time
  5. When we're in a crowd, our behaviors change--we notice and interpret things differently
  6. "When we're in the presence of other people, we're less likely to assume responsibility for what's going on around us" http://pic.twitter.com/ZhJbo8D4
  7. Differences between men and women are surprisingly context-dependent when you look closely
  8. What factors predict attraction? 97% of these factors deal with physical/personality traits...context/circumstances only account for 3%
  9. Common context-dependent differences between men and women: math ability, spacial skills, and agression
  10. "Personality type and character are overrated." Understand the role context plays if you want to understand what makes people tick.
  11. Thanks @samsommers for a fabulous talk! For more info on "Situations Matter," check out: samsommers.com/Situations_Mat…
