Pac-Man causes obesity and other lessons The Globe has yet to learn from video games
An editorial in today's Globe and Mail titled "Assassin’s Creed III video game distorts history" lamented the false history lessons Canadian young people would be exposed to when playing the video game. It spawned a hashtag on Twitter and some seriously funny responses
- The following tweets make more sense if you read the editorial first. Here is just some of the reaction on Twitter:
- No matter what performance enhancing pellets are available, it is not recommended to eat a ghost. #globeeditorial
- The 1980s saw both the appearance of gobbling Pac-Man and the start of the obesity epidemic. Where was the CRTC? #GlobeEditorial
- As millenials enter the workforce, they would do well to remember that "bosses" deserve their respect, not a brutal death. #GlobeEditorial
- If you find a heart in a container, report it to the authorities. Do not attempt to consume #GlobeEditorial
- (Also) Mario Bros video game continues to promote Italian stereotypes and outdated gender norms ow.ly/1Pzv2o #GlobeEditorial
- That books can physically transport readers to "ages" is a contention unsupported by both physics and literary scholarship. #GlobeEditorial
- I once saw a hedgehog take 23 minutes to cross a street. Sega Genesis, EXPLAIN THYSELF. #GlobeEditorial
- Go-karting without helmets promotes negligent driving behaviour, and misrepresents the real danger of banana peels. #GlobeEditorial
- "But let there be no illusions: When real space invaders come they won't be arrayed in neat rows." #globeeditorial
- Zoologists confirm that hedgehogs do not run super fast and show little affinity for collecting golden rings. #globeeditorial
- With a terrible physics engine, Pong has left generations of children unable to excel in ping-pong and tennis #GlobeEditorial
- As it turned out, that Fantasy wasn't Final at all, with a dozen sequels to follow. #GlobeEditorial
- In an era marked by obesity, what kind of terrible message is being sent to the youth of today by a gluttonous Pac Man? #GlobeEditorial
- You are not, in fact, standing in an open field west of a white house. #GlobeEditorial
- Punching trees does not, in fact, yield lumber, and can cause serious injury to the hand. #GlobeEditorial
- To portray the flight of ducks as both routine and repetitious in nature is to ignore the true nature of animal behaviour. #GlobeEditorial
- "Sim City's failure to give users the option of a comprehensive bike lane network is a scathing rebuke of modern urbanism" #globeeditorial
- In healthcare news: Up up down down left right left right B A will not in fact allow you to live forever. #GlobeEditorial
- Not everyone was laughing. These Globe freelancers defended the editorial:
- Come on, if you're basing a game (even if only loosely) on history, then get the facts straight. I agree with @globejunius. #globeeditorial
- Hate to be a downer, but I wonder how #globeeditorial tweeters would feel if their own history was misrepresented? It's a valid topic.
