"High Alert" - IRC rolls out emergency teams across Philippines
- Dec. 7, MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Hagupit (known locally as Ruby) made its second landfall today in Cataingan, Masbate province. The typhoon is pushing slowly West-Northwest through the Philippine islands, dumping torrential rains and driving dangerous storm surges of up to 10 feet.
The IRC is on high alert to respond with our local partners to flooding and landslides. “We continue to prepare for worst-case scenarios," said the IRC’s Melanie Teff, in Manila.
The IRC is rolling out emergency teams across the country, with local partners set to assess the damage and respond with necessary aid. “Where the storm has passed we will be focusing aid distributions where they are needed on hygiene, safe drinking water, and economic support like cash distributions,” Melanie said.
Typhoon Hagupit is expected to make a third landfall tomorrow in Northern Mindoro. The storm has forced up to one million people to evacuate from low-lying coastal areas, with many smaller isolated communities not yet accounted for. - Read the IRC's latest Philippines Typhoon update (Dec. 7, 2014, 4:30pm)
