Talking #TXHealth on Twitter

Highlights from our reader chats with state Senator Dan Patrick, state Representative Donna Howard and writer Mimi Swartz about Swartz's current TEXAS MONTHLY cover story, Mothers, Daughters, Sisters, Wives

  1. This week, TEXAS MONTHLY's Mimi Swartz--or rather, @mimiswartz--took to Twitter to discuss her August cover story on women's health. She was joined by two state legislators--state senator Dan Patrick and state representative Donna Howard--both of whom are featured in the article.

The first chat was on Tuesday, with Patrick, the main sponsor of SB 16, a.k.a. the "sonogram bill". With Planned Parenthood encouraging its followers to tweet and pro-life forces countering with a hashtag of their own, things became a little heated.
  2. Want to tell us why you wanted Tx. to have a sonogram law? #txhealth
  3. .@mimiswartz I was concerned about women getting the information needed before making final decision-testimony showed they weren't #txhealth
  4. @mimiswartz #txhealth Isn't it true the sonograms were already being performed but not shown to the women?
  5. @missemhorne No. Planned Parenthood did show sonograms to any woman who requested to see one. #txhealth
  6. .@missemhorne #txhealth in 3 yrs of testimony women said they didn't know a sonogram was performed, or if they asked, weren't allowed toview
  7. @mimiswartz @danpatrick #txhealth I was present for all sono hearings and recall testimony that sonograms were performed & avail for view
  8. Why does the TX govt refuse to understand the causality btwn elimination of family planning & increased need for med care? #txhealth
  9. @amstephens47 Dan, that is my question too. Want to take a crack please? #txhealth
  10. Patrick did not get a chance to answer this, but he did state that his bill does not mandate the type of sonogram to be performed.
  11. .@mimiswartz #txhealth there has been a lot of mis-reporting transvaginal sonograms are not in our bill or required-that's doctors decision
  12. That is straight up, false,@DanPatrick. When you force doctors to report gestational age, you force transvag ults. @mimiswartz #txhealth
  13. Dan Patrick is having a hard time answering questions in the #txhealth live tweet because he has to translate from Aramaic.
  14. .@JasStanford #txhealth considering Mr Stanford is listed as a Dem consultant I will focus on those who want to ask serious questions
  15. .@DanPatrick, several people taking part in this #TXhealth debate are out-of-state or pro-life activists. No vetoing @JasStanford
  16. @mimiswartz Have you seen the horrors of unregulated abortion? How is it scary to add a statute that backs up medical practice? #txhealth
  17. @missemhorne isn't the point to provide safe legal abortions instead of unregulated ones? #txhealth
  18. @mimiswartz @DanPatrick #txhealth: No, I'm not ashamed to say my goal is to end abortion and give women better care than that horror.
  19. .@DanPatrick @mimiswartz Abortion is healthcare that Texas women need. Stop trying to deny that FACT. #txhealth
  20. @DanPatrick #txhealth Texas Lege should have to see pics of 80k kids added to public schools each year before defunding public education.
  21. @willlutz Sure, there were women who supported the bill, just as many women opposed... #txhealth
  22. @willlutz @mimiswartz and it was WOMEN who lined up at the back mic on the House floor. Women in SUPPORT. #txhealth
  23. @DanPatrick An more effective way to reduce abrtns= Compreh sex ed. Defunding is punitive and short-sighted. #txhealth
  24. @scATX #txhealth I don't think you understand what a sonogram is-these have already been performed by PP for all patients just read my bill
  25. I have read your bill, Senator. Please explain to me, like I'm 5, what Section 2.a.1.C means then, @DanPatrick. #txhealth
