1. Jessica Engs '17 is from Los Angeles, CA and is studying abroad in Madrid, Spain this semester with SU Abroad. She is a Television, Radio & Film major at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
  2. On campus in Syracuse, Jessica is a Career Services Ambassador, a Newhouse Peer Adviser, the director of campus relations for the Protect Our Breasts club, and a member of SU's student social media team.
  3. What has been your favorite part about studying abroad so far?
  4. My favorite part about studying abroad has been exploring Madrid with my friends. I have learned so much about Spanish culture by trying new foods, interacting with locals, and exploring areas throughout the amazing city of Madrid.
  5. What is your favorite abroad memory?
  6. My favorite abroad memory was sitting on the grass at Anacapri on the island of Capri off the Amalfi Coast in Italy. This moment was so surreal for me because the view looked like a painting. It didn't seem real and I'm so lucky I was able to experience that. This experience felt the most "abroad" for me.
  7. If you could tell a current or incoming student just ONE thing about studying abroad at SU, what would it be?
  8. Go abroad! There is no other time in your life when you will be able to travel around the world with a group of your closest friends. You learn so much about yourself, different cultures, and the world in general.

  11. Madrid has so many hidden treasures and I was lucky to stumble across one on my run today. I came across a glass castle and had to stop and take a look. After doing some research, I found out that it is called the Palacio de Cristal and was built in 1887 to exhibit plants and animals from the Philippines - pretty cool!

Madrid is an amazing city and I'm so glad I chose to study here for 4 months. If you want to learn more about @suabroad, check out www.suabroad.syr.edu - JE #SyracuseU

  12. One of my favorite classes abroad is Hemingway in Spain. I just finished one of his most famous novels, "The Sun Also Rises," which is about the running of the bulls and bullfighting at the Festival of San Fermín in Pamplona. Hemingway's writing is captivating and the topics of his novels are so interesting. I can't wait to get started on our next novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls. Enjoy your Thursday, #OrangeNation! - JE #SyracuseU

  13. Today, I took the Teleférico over Madrid. It's a gondola that takes you over the city and Casa de Campo, the largest park in Madrid. After being dropped off in the middle of Casa de Campo, some friends and I walked around and had lunch next to a pretty lake. Although it was a little windy, today was a really nice and relaxing day. I hope your Friday was as great as mine! - JE #SyracuseU

  14. Today I took a day trip to Toledo, which is only a 30-minute train ride from Madrid. The city was absolutely beautiful. My favorite part was the Toledo Cathedral (shown above). I was able to catch the last part of a mass that was taking place and I also saw "The Disrobing of Christ", one of El Greco's best pieces of art. Overall, Toledo was an amazing city and I can't wait to go back one day! - JE #SyracuseU
