SMSS12 Panel: Facebook Marketing

Amy Porterfield, Phyllis Khare and Andrea Vahl, co-authors of Facebook Marketing: All-in-One for Dummies, discuss all things Facebook with moderator, Mike Stelzner.

  1. Excited to have a session with @AndreaVahl who has been incredibly helpful and knowledgeable in the #smss12 LinkedIn group!
  2. Q. What are creative brands doing with timelines?

Amy: Keep them dynamic and interesting. Change them strategically so they appeal to your audience. Mari's is cool.  If I do a webinar, I change out my cover to promote it. BUT BE CAREFUL because FB has certain guidelines on promotion on cover photos. SMExaminer does a great job, too.
Crust Pizzeria takes photos of their customers, which is a nice idea for a local business.
Easy Lunchboxes does a great job of showing product. Show what you're selling - images speak loudly.
In general, images are more popular than ever.
  3. Timelines, what are creative bands doing? @marismith is one example. Change your timeline covers often #smss12
  4. Think about keeping your Timeline cover photo dynamic by changing it out says @AmyPorterfield #smss12
  5. Show what you're selling on your timeline cover if you have visual appealing products #smss12
  6. No calls to action allowed on Timeline Covers, but featuring your product is AOK says @AmyPorterfield #smss12
  7. You can't have a website or a call to action in Facebook Timeline but you can promote, such as events @smexaminer does it well on FB #smss12
  8. SME does a great job to pull in their branding and promoting their networking clubs with great graphics. Use more imagery than text. #smss12
  9. Pull your branding into the image for the Facebook apps to be consistent #smss12
  10. Amy: consider putting together your own image campaign. I did one with experts and their quotes and it was very popular.
  11. Facebook loves for people to express themselves. It seems images are getting prominent position in the news feed. #smss12 @AmyPorterfield
  12. Like quotes? So do your fans! Try photo quotes to encourage likes & shares recommends @AmyPorterfield #smss12
  13. Q: What should marketers understand about Edgerank?

Phyllis: Facebook has been experimenting with it.  As you know, Edgerank is a magical math formula that decides what shows up in individual newsfeeds. Look into edgerankchecker (a free, non-Facebook tool).
  14. EdgeRank: Affinity of the fan, weight of media (video --> text), time decay @phylliskhare #smss12
  15. It can be shocking that ppl who liked your page does not necessarily see your posts @phylliskhare #smss12 #Facebook
  16. #ProTip: Use 'EdgeRankChecker' and see what's being shown to people who like your page #smss12 @AmyPorterfield
