My arrest and detention by #NISS! #SudanRevolts
Brief summary of the circumstances that led to and details of my arrest and detention by Sudan's National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), for attending a protest in Burri neighborhood in Khartoum, Sudan on 22 June.
- Just want to remind tweeps that as I promised, am in the process of writing about my detention & imprisonment experience! #SudanRevolts
- That being said, I owe tweeps briefing them about what I've gone thru since my arrest. Thought I'd spare you that during Eid. #SudanRevolts
- I was arrested during a protest in Burri neighborhood in Khartoum on June 22. My intention was to document & join the protest. #SudanRevolts
- Without further detail for now, I was arrested by an #NISS agent in plainclothes who approached me while I was tweeting. #SudanRevolts
- I remember very clearly that I was writing about the huge attempts made by #NISS to prevent any documentation of the protest. #SudanRevolts
- When he arrested me, he attempted to snatch my smartphone that I was carrying. The 1st thing I did is to resist him & lock it! #SudanRevolts
- Locking my phone, which I've password-protected, later became the catalyst for much abuse, torture & interrogation I'd endured #SudanRevolts
- When taken to an #NISS pickup truck that was stationed by the protest area, I was ordered several times to unlock my phone. #SudanRevolts
- I fiercely refused. When they finally gave up on me, I was taken alone on a pickup, blindfolded, to #NISS premises in Bahri. #SudanRevolts
- At #NISS building, I endured almost 4 or 5 hours of verbal abuse, severe beating up and all kind of threats to unlock my phone #SudanRevolts
- The marks of beatings on my back are still, after two months since that day, visible on my back. I have it all documented. #SudanRevolts
- I was threatened w/ sexual assault/abuse numerous times during that day. At one point, even by a top-rank #NISS officer. #SudanRevolts
- I endured severe beating up on my head w/ a rock, 'cause my phone while in their possession, received a call from the U.S. #SudanRevolts
- The torturer who had gone pretty mad was hysterically shouting "You're an agent, AGENT, AGENT!" while beating me up! #SudanRevolts
- After every round of torture, they'd bring me the phone & say, "We've a technical committee that can just unlock your phone" #SudanRevolts
- At every time I told them to the make their damn committee "just unlock it for you". #SudanRevolts
- I endured severe beating up to the chest for refusing to answer irrelevant personal questions, like "Do you've a girlfriend?" #SudanRevolts
- When finally gave up on me, I was taken to an office, where 2 NISS officers, joined later by a 3rd, interrogated me until 4 am #SudanRevolts
- My wrist was swollen, bleeding from a wound I've sustained. My physical/psychological status wasn't ready for interrogation. #SudanRevolts
- Nonetheless, I was interrogated until 4 am, and subjected to all kind of pressure, direct and indirect threats. #SudanRevolts
- When again, they finally gave up on me, I was ordered by an officer, in front of me, to be deprived from sleeping. #SudanRevolts
- An armed sergeant guarded me during the night, and I was forced to stay in an extremely exhaustive body position. #SudanRevolts
- Next day was rounds of interrogation & investigation sessions. But again for once more, I received scores of slaps & punches. #SudanRevolts
- About midday on that 2nd day, I was taken to a backyard, where I for the 1st time saw other detainees who were brought along. #SudanRevolts
