Game Studies with rgMOOC 2 (Rhetoric and Game-Based MOOC)!

rgMOOC 2, or "Rhetoric and Composition: The Persuasive Power of Video Games as Paratexts", is the second version of a pilot and an experimental rhetoric and game-based massive open online course that will run 10-weeks between September 2, 2013 - November 10, 2013.

Game Studies is a growing interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary field that involves the study of game systems, game design, and gameplay through lenses such as psychology, philosophy, rhetoric, architecture, physics, semiotics, engineering, linguistics, etc. The exciting field is quickly capturing the attention of academics from multiple disciplines who want to understand the meaning of play in today's world, of which communication is primarily contextualized by the web, social media, and digital games.

    rgMOOC 2, or "Rhetoric and Composition: The Persuasive Power of Video Games as Paratexts", is the second version of a pilot and an experimental rhetoric, connectivist, and game-based massive open online course that explores game studies. rgMOOC 2 is a free and open course, and will run 10-weeks between September 2, 2013 - November 10, 2013. This course is co-created by Sherry Jones and Kate Guthrie Carusoand is completely free and open for anyone to take (we welcome gamers, non-gamers, writers, educators, or enthusiastic learners to join us!).

    Given the title of the course, your immediate questions may be: 1) what is a paratext?; 2) how are video games persuasive? Throughout this course, we will go over theories in rhetoric, such as "procedural rhetoric," to help you understand why digital games are socio-political texts that actually make claims about the physical world. We will go over writing composition and textual strategies with which to participate in collaborative writing exercises. Essentially, we will learn to play, analyze, and write about digital games together. rgMOOC 2 will be organized based on the theories of connectivism and game-based learning, so do expect to use a variety of social media tools to complete co-writing exercises that will help improve your writing skills through gaming. For this second version of rgMOOC, we will also be exploring the sandbox landscape of Minecraft!  In collaboration with Kae Novak, the master instructor and learning engineer of Games MOOC, International Society of Technology in Education - Special Interest Group - Gaming and Virtual Education (ISTE SIGVE), Inevitable Betrayal Guild of G.A.M.E., FRCC, and CCCOnline, we have co-created a server for our respective MOOCs, Guilds, and Colleges to stake our claim in the world of Minecraft!  Below is a video tour of our rgMOOC 2 Sanctuary in Minecraft by Stephen Getter @TheGameMole, who is our in-house Game Designer and Gameplay Specialist:

    As there are many approaches to game studies, rgMOOC 2 approaches games studies by applying Rhetoric and Composition to analyzing the anatomy of digital games.  This means that participants will be playing and writing about video games for all 10 weeks by completing rigorous writing exercises.  Through gaming, we expect participants to develop rhetorically effective writing skills by composing via digital mediums, and gain a deeper understanding of how games reflect and influence cultural and political values in the real world.
  16. Insights We Have Gained from rgMOOC 1 (May 28 - August 1, 2013)

  17. After running rgMOOC 1, which ran from May 28 - August 1, 2013, we have gained some valuable student feedback about their experience in this revolutionary MOOC.  We ran a concurrent hybrid course at Arapahoe Community College (ACC), in which students were able to take rgMOOC 1 while meeting once a week with us in a physical classroom. Currently, only ACC students are able to receive college credit for successfully completing rgMOOC, while non-ACC rgMOOC participants will have the opportunity to earn a rgMOOC Completion Badge by fulfilling course requirements. Watch the video below to learn what ACC students think about rgMOOC 1:

  19. rgMOOC Conference Tour!

  20. Our adventure with rgMOOC continues to the conference arena.  The Slideshare below is our August 7, 2013 presentation at Colorado Teaching and Learning with Technology 2013 (COLTT 2013) conference that explains the theories and methods used in rgMOOC 1.  The theory, gMOOC, or Game-Based MOOC (the term is co-founded by Sherry Jones (Professor of Philosophy, Rhetoric, and Composition) and Jack Park (Founder of the Knowledge Gardening Theory)), is a new type of MOOC designed with the combination of game-based learning, gamification, narrative, role-playing, and connectivist theories. gMOOC goes beyond cMOOC and connectivism by incorporating game-based thinking in the UX design of the learning platform and experience.  As of August 24, 2013, the Slideshare has been viewed by more than 1750 professionals and academics at an exponential rate (and still growing), an indication that ideas of gMOOC and rgMOOC are gaining traction in the academic world and in the MOOC universe.
