Are We Teaching Digital Writing?

I posed this question and got some wonderful responses and insights.

  1. Writing teachers...when teaching writing, what % of time should be devoted to specifically teaching writing on the web? Ballpark %
  2. @shareski What do you mean by "writing on the web"? Good writing is good writing, regardless the medium. @budtheteacher @dogtrax
  3. @shareski should be? or is? my experience as a parent was that there was no writing instruction on any genres except research paper & essay
  4. @shareski Depends on what counts as "digital." I jot short notes on paper rarely sometimes. Almost everything starts with a keyboard.
  5. @shareski I have my Writing 12 students publish blogs, and portfolios as part of the course. Almost all of their writing ends up online.
  6. @shareski Not sure of a %. In a perfect world, I would have them blogging consistently and teaching academic writing in certain units.
  7. @shareski I think writing for "online" audiences is more authentic and practical than the "5 paragraph essay". Formal format is not engaging
  8. @shareski Yeah. The trick is how best to do that. Building spaces is phase one. Using the hell out of them seems phase three.
  9. @budtheteacher @shareski And it would seem to me that one phase would inform the others. In other words, it's a fluid, non-linear process.
  10. @shareski Phase two is something like modeling and showing folks how the "new spaces" work in a way that isn't fake.
  11. @shareski 10%-25% should be aimed toward publishing learning on the web through blogging (reflective journaling, exposition, description)
  12. @shareski @smartinez @budtheteacher When I compose digitally, I 'm aware that the "text" is actively coauthored via reposting comment links
  13. @sjciske but you have to consider audience, medium and purpose for any writing @shareski @budtheteacher @dogtrax
  14. RT @poh: @MaryAnnReilly @shareski @budtheteacher @smartinez "Teachers of digital composing should compose digitally" might be an appropriate slogan.
