I was impressed with Amazon.com's quick turnaround on my Kindle Fire order. I received my new ereader in less than 24 hours (courtesy of Amazon Prime) and I received a friendly, helpful email from the clever upsell folks at Amazon on Thursday evening that started out with the graphic below. It went on to explain how to get my new machine up and running, how to access (and add) content, and how to purchase, purchase, purchase more goodies from Amazon.

Porter Anderson reminded me about the glowing endorsement he published back in November.

Me, I like it. Why? Two words: back light. I appreciate E Ink, but I like mine glowing in the dark. I’ve been yelling at Seattle’s Mt. Olympus about back light ever since I got my Kindle Alpha. Boy, did I learn to love those clip-on Mighty Brights. But now I have glowy, brightness-adjustable luminosity. I could roast a chestnut on this open Fire. Also, films to distract me from reading what I’m supposed to read. And cloudly music. I mean really. I’m giving the Kindle Fire the #PorterEndorsed seal of approval. I’ve unchained the UPS man and I’m feeding my lunch leftovers to the buzzards so he can get away in that big brown truck.

It was never meant to be an iPad. That's Apple's tablet designed to let you do some reading. This is an e-reader designed to do some tablety stuff. I even use it while live-tweeting conferences as a second screen to my laptop so I can track the pace of my tweets moving online. And did I mention backlight? :)

Porter, the backlight, the remarkably GOOD backlight strikes me as one of the strongest selling points for the K-Fire. Confirmation soon. Meanwhile I'll quote this iPad nugget: "That's Apple's tablet designed to let you do some reading. This is an e-reader designed to do some tablety stuff." Curtain!

This Kindle Fire vs. iPad comparison is buzzing across the interwebs. Here's an interesting exchange with one of our Depot Theatre stars, David Murray Jaffe, and my one-time American School of Paris colleague, Mark Condon.

Not won over...yet; am trying, but all I can muster is the New Yorker on my Kindle. I see and appreciate the flexibility, especially as one who travels, but nothing compares to the feel of a real, live book. That sounds a bit curmudgeonly, ...and that's what the OxBridge types thought of the new-fangled novel once upon a time--that it would destroy literature (the world) as we know it. Or, more recently that's what people thought of movies or TV. Maybe true, maybe not. In the end, have about 50 books on my kindle and haven't gotten past page 10 on any of 'em.

I like mine. it's not really built so much for book reading. Unlike the regular Kindle, it's backlit like a computer screen. But I like being able to access email and apps. Keyboard is a little funky. It's not a iPad, but it doesn't cost as much, either. Keep in mind that you need access to wifi to get on internet.

George, it's hard to describe but my reluctance has something to do with being hardwired to holding a book with facing pages. The kindle page is not equal to a "real" book page (let alone the facing page). Indeed page numbers are gone repla...ced with % of book read (which is and isn't a cool feature). For many, this isn't an issue. It's beyond aesthetics--I like the feel of my kindle; it's better than an ipad. I've always loved the way books feel in my hands, and I guess it's as simple as that. My kids will grow up with ipads and kindles, tablets and nooks. Won't be an issue for them.

Thanks, Amy Guglielmo, for weighing in with this response: "Just read my second book on an ipad and I'm hooked! Not sure that I see the reason to add a Kindle if I already have an ipad. Very curious to hear your thoughts."

My thoughts will be forthcoming as soon as the Kindle Fire arrives and gets test driven around the block a few times.

I admit that I too really, REALLY like the iPad experience, but I'm fascinated with Amazon's direct-to-customer relationship and the likelihood that they'll be the first wide scale digital book bundler. They seem to grok the future of books better than most of mainstream publishing at this point, and if this device is the vehicle of choice for a growing portion of the book audience, it looks like we all need to familiarize ourselves with it...

Although the fox seems to have moved on, his apex predator slot was quickly filled by an always hungry hawk who's dietary preferences run to dove rather than squirrel, but I wanted to loop back and share two interesting responses to the question at the end of my "Fox & Squirrel" post.

It turns out that plump, well-fed squirrels are not only a tasty breakfast for a fox but they are also easy prey, unable to skitter up the ginkgo tree as quickly as necessary to escape the hungry hunter. Despite the emotionally disturbing reality of observing any predator-prey showdown, the foxes cunning and efficiency intrigued me in the way the playful kits had more than a quarter century ago. I’ll save details for another time as I know that my bride suffers these descriptions. She’s informed my on multiple occasions that our yard is a safe haven for wildlife, which is a laudable decision, but difficult to enforce. So far we’ve failed to communicate the message to the foxes and hawks… Any suggestions?

Adirondack High Peaks native, Suzanne McSherry dished up fox field smarts that make a lot of sense. Well, practical sense, at least. My bride was nonplussed with having a labyrinth of logs and culverts scattered over the front lawn.

Depends on what critters you feel need protection from foxes and hawks. Generally I would suggest you create a network of "cover" and protection for smaller critters - anything from sheds with small-diameter run-ins or porches under which a... rabbit could hide to a variety of plants, hollow logs, even culverts. Space these at close intervals around the property (20 or 30 feet) and the chipmunks, bunnies and songbirds will have an advantage. But, then again, the fox and hawks need to eat!

I've been a bit cavalier with these Rosslyn predator posts, and I apologize if I've trampled sensitive souls in the process. I've recently been reminded how emotionally wrought these experiences can be, even when offering an unfiltered glimpse of nature's majesty. Yes, I said majesty. If you think I'm throwing around high dollar words for effect, you've never watched a fox or a hawk stalk and win it's living.

That said, on an early, still dark morning this week I was fixing breakfast for Griffin and caught sight of a mama and papa mallard walking up our driveway away from Lake Champlain. They were not meandering, whispering sweet nothings and pondering a vacation in Bali. They were focused, intense, studious. I surmised that they were hunting for a home, a comfy place for egg laying.

My optimism soared. I flashed back to "Make Way for Ducklings". If you missed the video last spring, here's another chance.

As a child, one of my favorite picture books was Make Way for Ducklings , by Robert McCloskey . Really... Okay, am I giving away too much...

I kept an eye on the earnest mallards until they disappeared beyond the carriage barn. I was willing them to settle down and raise ducklings, the closest I'll probably get to raising ducks of my own.

And suddenly I remembered the fox. And the hawk. And my heart raced...

Don't you dare, get those ducklings!

It seems that people either love or hate Brussels sprouts. As a kid I fit into the latter group. Yuck! The smell alone... But some years ago I discovered that I loved them. Senile taste buds? Perhaps. Evolving appetite? Perhaps.

I believe my Brussels sprouts transformation hinged upon discovering delicious new ways to eat the sprouts. In particular I have two totally different Brussels sprouts preparations which tantalize my taste buds. One cooked and the other raw. I'll save the latter for a hotter day, but today's chilly Adirondack snowfall is perfect for Brussels Sprouts with Shallots and Wild Mushrooms.

There it is! Even an unabashed Brussels sprout lover felt the need to clarify her desire. Deep in the interstices of our mushy gray matter is an ingrained fear of stinky, mushy boiled micro-cabbage. So even when we've derived our own magical concoctions, we're still wary.

So far 2012 in the Adirondacks is the winter that wasn't. The Champlain Valley and environs remain virtually snow free, though the temperatures have drifted into the freezing zone often enough. Perhaps we used up all the rain during the spring floods and Tropical Storm Irene?

Rather than lamenting the snowless conditions TrekEast's John Davis lead us off on a hiking, picnic'ing and skating escapade...
