On June 3 The Mother Church invited members and friends to attend its Annual Meeting 2013. Pews in Boston were left empty — as attendees gathered via the internet to share "the biggest global hug."

It has been a remarkable day for The Mother Church, its members and the movement of Christian Scientists around the world. Following the advice of church founder and leader Mary Baker Eddy that "no other than its officers are required to be present" (Manual of The Mother Church, article XIII, section 1), the Annual Meeting 2013 was conducted only by the Christian Science Board of Directors directly in Boston, Massachusetts, and attended by thousands of members on the web, on Twitter, and in a "virtual church lobby" after the meeting. The online meeting included updates, reports, and gobal greetings.
