(MSLOC) at Northwestern University are experienced business
professionals of all ages and backgrounds, but most have limited
experience with social technology. At MSLOC they become more effective
digital, networked learners. They blog, participate actively in online
discussions, use Twitter and Google+, and enhance their learning
experience by discovering new resources, making new connections, and
making sense of new ideas. In this session, we will share the practices
we use to convert the timid and the non-believers. We will also describe
plans for our next-generation learning platform based on Jive Software.Jeff (@jeffmerrell) and Keeley (@sorokti) are both graduates of the MS Learning & Organizational Change program at Northwestern University and are now on staff. following P. Diddy and CNN wore off on Twitter. I became curious about
conversations related to start-ups and product development, so I started
following people who consistently talked about those things. I
recognized value as soon as I discovered that people who were intensely
involved in the things I'm interested in would curate knowledge for me
for free!- Jason Becker, MSLOC Alum, on Google+

Answer 4: I did not really see myself as a real "digital learner" until most
recently when I had my NY Times app on my mobile phone send me a message
regarding the shooting at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, WI. We have
family and friends in the Oak Creek area, so the shooting was very close
to home.

My husband was in a panic because we were in Illinois
at the time and did not have access to Milwaukee news, until CNN started
to get reports about a hostage situation. I told my husband and the
friends we were with, "Quick, get on Twitter!" They both looked at me
like I was kidding. I told them that I get a lot of my news now from
Twitter and follow journalists or talk show hosts to get the latest
information. My friend responded with, "Really? I thought Twitter was
just like another way to text people." I responded, "Yes, in some ways.
It's a way of sharing a text with several or many people all at once. It
can get forwarded to others via 'retweeting' or you can respond to a
tweet someone sent you and it's free. No texting fees!"

I then explained
to them that many journalists probably get some of their news from
Twitter. If someone at the crime scene is Tweeting, you would be able to
see it (which is remarkable, of course). I received news and
updates on the Sikh Temple shooting faster than what CNN had confirmed
and the information came from multiple Milwaukee sources. I then
realized that Twitter wasn't just for sharing thoughts around 431
readings or assignments, it was a means for capturing moments in time,
sharing thoughts with others and communicating to the world what was
going on in your mind at the time. The most amazing thing is seeing how
people react to those words and thoughts put on some software program,
crossing all walks of life regardless of your history, gender,
ethnicity, religion, age or place in the world. I realized that what I
loved about Twitter was how it felt collaborative, interactive and
thought-provoking all in 140 characters or less. - Peggy Troyer, MSLOC Student, on Google+

Why social tech for learning?
