Educause discusses the "modern learning commons" (April 2011) in terms of what it is, how it woks, who's building them and why. Downsides are also discussed. Two highlights from this article include the implication that LCs need to be designed with student and faculty learning and teaching needs as the primary drivers and that the design of LCs are local. While LC's share many common features, each must meet the needs of the unique populations it serves.

York University, in planning for their learning commons, make an important point that applies to this collection of documents as well... The intention of this document is to begin discussions, not to define a vision.  Learning spaces are effective only when they are developed in dialogue with local needs and users.

Early collaborative spaces that melded teaching, learning and research resources were called "information commons". This article touches on this topic then moves the conversation to "learning commons".  One key point this article makes is that: "too often, planning for new spaces . . . begins with the wrong questions"--questions about what and how much will go in the space.  Such questions usually yield answers relating to things (books and computers, for instance) and services (help with reference questions and the use of technology in the case of the information commons).   The right first questions focus instead "on student learning--what actually is to happen in the classroom and lab" and, one may add, in the learning commons. The key, then, is to replace our typical first question about what should be in a space with the less typical question, what should happen in the space.

One might never have guessed that the grounds upon which we devoutly study and pursue our developing futures were once catacombs of tombstones and a myriad of skeletons. During the visit with USF&#8217;S archivist Father Kotlanger, the haunted past of the University slowly began to unravel, revealing the somewhat startling truth that our University is built on top of very old and large burial grounds dating back to the 1800's.

In early July 2011, a story started to take shape via Twitter when the construction workers digging in front of Harney Science Center dug up a few coffins.  

Harney is being excavated in preparation for the new USF Center for Science and Innovation.
