Both candidates kicked off the debate looking calm and confident, seated at a long table with ABC News Correspondent Martha Raddatz moderating. Candidates couldn't interrupt while their rival gave a mandatory two-minute response to each question, but there were plenty of incredulous grins, raised eyebrows and pursed lips to tell you exactly what they were thinking.

Vice President Biden's constant grinning was the subject of many tweets during the first half of the debate, and though Big Bird didn't come up again, another fictional children's character did, on Twitter at least:

Online commentators offered mixed reviews as to whether Biden's Cheshire Cat grin was condescending or commanding.
Performance-wise, Biden had a strong start to the debate with many viewers commenting that he performed better than Obama.

The Aurora Borealis, in the Northern Hemisphere, and Aurora Australis, in the Southern Hemisphere, occur when the sun releases solar particles that react with the Earth's atmosphere producing the colourful light displays.

The colours vary depending on oxygen and nitrogen levels in the air and the amount of energy that is absorbed.

The phenomenon is best viewed in the months between September and March and during a clear moonless night.

Sightings of the natural light show were reported in England, Scotland, Canada, and Tasmania.

Big Bird has come out as the star of the presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney.

The character from popular children's program Sesame Street became viral on Twitter after Romney said he would cut subsidies to the Public Broadcasting System (PBS), which broadcasts the show.

"I love Big Bird... But I"m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for it," he said. 


Within moments, numerous satirical Big Bird accounts were created in support of the character. One account FiredBigBird amassed over 20,000 followers within a few hours. 

According to Twitter Government, which tracks uses of Twitter for civic engagement, there were 17,000 tweets per minute for “Big Bird” and 10,000 tweets per minute for “PBS”.

Tweeters were also vocal about the performances of the presidential candidates. Romney was praised for his confidence and energy while Obama was criticised for appearing distracted and tired.
Moderator Jim Lehrer was not left unscathed with viewers criticising his performance. Within an hour of the debate, "Jim Lehrer" and "poor Jim" were trending topics worldwide. 
Twitter has reported that the presidential debate is the most tweeted about event in US political history.
